It wasn't until a deed transfer in 1921 that the benefactor's identity was revealed—John C. Thompson, a prominent businessman with the New York Air Brake Company.
Following Mr. Thompson's passing, papers discovered among his belongings explained the inspiration behind his remarkable gift. He envisioned a place where children could play freely, families could gather, and everyone could experience the joy, beauty, and tranquility of nature. More than 100 years later, his vision continues to thrive.
To bring that vision to life, Thompson commissioned renowned landscape architects Frederic Law Olmsted Jr. and John C. Olmsted, whose firm
was responsible for designing many of America's most celebrated parks. Their thoughtful plan included strategic entrances and connections to surrounding neighborhoods, downtown Watertown, and the Black River, ensuring the park would serve not only as a recreational space but also as an important contributor to the city's growth and economy.
One of Thompson Park's most distinctive features is its beautiful stonework. The iconic walls, staircases, pillars, scenic overlooks, and several original structures were handcrafted using fieldstone gathered from the property and stone quarried from three locations within the park itself. These timeless details continue to showcase the craftsmanship and character that make Thompson Park unlike any other.
Today, Thompson Park remains one of Watertown's premier destinations for outdoor recreation and community gatherings.
